Pearl Method Granulator — Real Options, Real Prices

Ask: A real pan granulator (rotating disc pelletizer) that's simple, practice-scale, and still usable in the business later. No throwaway. Used is fine. Amex-payable if possible. Stop quoting "what they should cost" — find what they actually cost.

TL;DR — the pick

Yushunxin SXYZ-600 disc granulator (600 mm / 23.6" pan, 0.75 kW motor, 0.05–0.1 t/h capacity). ~$1,000 FOB China + ~$400–700 ocean freight + customs = ~$1,500–1,800 landed on the patio. Payable via Alibaba Trade Assurance with Amex (2.95% card fee, full buyer protection, $12K/order Amex cap). Same machine handles kitchen-table practice batches and small-business production — you won't outgrow it for at least the first year or two of orders.

Two backup paths: the gold-standard Mars Mineral DP-14 "Agglo-Miser" (US-made lab unit, quote-only, probably $8–15K new — worth watching used listings), and the Yushunxin SXYZ-500 at ~$750 if budget is tight and you're confident you won't need production scale for a while.

Yushunxin SXYZ-600 — the pick

Who: Zhengzhou Shunxin Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd. Henan, China. Family of small-fertilizer-plant machines; the SXYZ series is their small-disc pelletizer line specifically for "small fertilizer production plants" — which is exactly the regime you're in.

Spec: 600 mm disc, 0.75 kW motor, 0.05–0.1 t/h output. Rotary speed ~33.5 r/min standard (the sister SEEC SEECYZ-600 published that; Yushunxin's twin is built the same way). Edge height ~280 mm, dimensions ~800×700×950 mm. Tilt is adjustable; a frequency inverter for RPM control is a commonly-added option on request.

Price: ~$1,000 FOB China (listed). 5–10% discount on POs per their page. Add ~$400–700 ocean freight to a US port + $200–400 customs/broker. Total landed: ~$1,500–1,800 on the patio.

Payment: Alibaba Trade Assurance — Amex works, 2.95% card fee, max $12K per credit-card order (well above this). Full Trade Assurance refund protection if it doesn't ship or arrives broken.

Lead time: 2–3 weeks build + 4–6 weeks ocean = ~2 months door-to-door. Air freight possible for ~$1,500 extra and ~10 days total, but not worth it.

Why this one: Matches the 500–600 mm spec already written into your Concrete_Mix_Recipes.md (45° tilt, 20–50 RPM target, 3–5 mm BB output). Capacity at 0.05–0.1 t/h means ~100–200 lb of pearls per hour — a 5 lb human yields about 1–2 hours of granulator time per batch, which means this machine can carry a full pet-scale line well into year two.

Spec: 500 mm disc, 0.55 kW motor, 0.02–0.05 t/h output. Rotary speed + tilt adjustable. Otherwise identical construction to the 600.

Price: ~$750 FOB + ~$400–700 freight + customs = ~$1,200–1,400 landed.

Trade-off: Saves ~$300 landed vs the 600. Costs you throughput at production scale — 0.02–0.05 t/h = 40–100 lb/hr, so a human-scale batch of 5 lbs of cremains pearls still takes 1–2 hours per jar. That's fine. What you lose is the ability to run multiple jars in parallel the way the 600 can. For pet-only or low-volume, the 500 is enough; for "I want headroom for human cremation orders," the 600 earns its extra $300.

Mars Mineral DP-14 "Agglo-Miser" — US-made gold standard

Who: Mars Mineral, Mars, Pennsylvania. US manufacturer of industrial agglomeration equipment since 1970s. The DP-14 is their laboratory / R&D bench unit.

Spec: 14" (355 mm) disc, 1/4 HP digital-drive motor, 5–50 RPM variable, horizontal to 60° tilt, three pan depths (3"/6"/9"), 304 stainless steel construction, optional binder spray system with pressure gauge and needle valve. Most adjustable unit on this page by far.

Price: Not public — quote only. Based on comparable US-made lab agglomerators, expect $8,000–15,000 new. This is the "real lab instrument" price premium. Amex accepted direct to the vendor (most US industrial vendors take AmEx corporate).

Trade-off: Beautiful machine, perfect for practice. Too small for production — 14" disc caps output at lab quantities, maybe 5–15 pearls per batch. You'd outgrow it the moment you ship your second customer. Buy this if you want a forever practice rig and a separate production-scale Chinese unit later; skip if you want one machine to carry both.

Who: Zhejiang-based mineral processing equipment house. The "lab" line is aimed at Chinese university mineral-processing departments — so the polish is higher than the Yushunxin fertilizer-farm line, but the price is higher too.

Spec: 400 / 600 / 800 / 1000 / 1400 mm disc options. Frequency-inverter speed control + digital speed display standard. Disc angle adjustable. Optional powder mixer + liquid spray device + hot-air drying system bundled.

Price: Not public. Quote via WhatsApp +86-13663817586 or sales@zjhminerals.com. Based on the lab-grade positioning, estimate $1,800–2,500 for the 400 mm bare unit; bundles with spray + dryer push toward $3,500–4,500.

Trade-off: Nicer controls than Yushunxin at maybe 2× the price. Worth it if you want "plug in and start pelletizing" without hunting for a separate VFD. Skip if you're OK with the Yushunxin + a $60 VFD add-on yourself.

Used market — worth watching, nothing hot right now

Checked 2026-04-24 across the four biggest used-industrial-equipment marketplaces:

  • Machinio — mostly industrial plastic pelletizing (Fuji Paudal PV-20, Gala SPHERO-220). No lab disc units listed today.
  • Aaron Equipment — one unit: 132" Dovin pelletizing drum. Industrial-scale. Not for us.
  • Surplus Record — three listings, all industrial.
  • eBay — plastic pelletizers + Soviet demonstration models. Nothing matching a bench disc granulator.
  • LabX.com — has had matching fine-disc pelletizer listings in the past (including a 304 stainless "55-minute fine disc pelletizer"); worth subscribing to an alert. Auto-fetch was blocked today — open the page manually to check.

The move: Set a Machinio + eBay saved-search alert for "disc pelletizer" and "pan granulator" and let them run in the background. If a used Mars Mineral P-series, DP-14, or Eriez lab unit pops up for $2K–5K, that's your best dollar — US-made, serviced, no freight from China. The alert costs nothing; it'll just page you if/when one shows.

DIY build — on the table, but mostly not worth it

Rough BOM: 24" steel disc (waterjet cut from 1/8" plate ~$120), 1/3 HP AC gear motor with 30–60 RPM output (~$180), manual tilt frame (~$150 steel + bearings), VFD for speed control (~$80), binder spray bottle or plant sprayer (~$30), base frame + hardware (~$100), plus welding gas + consumables. ~$700–900 + your weekend.

Trade-off: Saves $300–800 vs a Chinese unit. Costs you 2–3 weekends of build time, risk of getting the geometry wrong (disc perpendicularity + tilt range are tighter than they look), no vendor support, no Trade Assurance refund if you botch it. If you already love welding and want the build as the craft, do it. If the goal is "start making pearls," buy the SXYZ-600 and spend your weekends on chemistry experiments instead.

Amex & payment notes

Alibaba Trade Assurance accepts Amex directly on-platform. 2.95% credit card fee. Max $12K per Amex order. Full refund protection if the goods aren't shipped, are late, or fail spec — Alibaba holds the payment in escrow until you confirm receipt. This is the right way to buy from an unknown Chinese factory; it's much safer than wiring money directly to their bank.

Mars Mineral is a US vendor; call and ask directly — most industrial B2B suppliers take Amex on invoices < $25K, though a few route large ones to ACH to avoid the interchange fee.

ZJH Minerals — no on-platform storefront. Payment likely T/T (wire) unless they have an Alibaba listing you route through. If they don't, Trade Assurance protection doesn't apply and you're wiring blind to a Chinese bank. Don't pay them outside Trade Assurance.

Duty & customs: HTS 8479.82 ("mixing, kneading machines") typically runs ~2.9% duty. On a $1,000 machine that's ~$30 duty plus $150–300 broker/clearance fees. The Yushunxin page's freight estimate usually excludes this; budget ~$500 total for freight+customs on top of the FOB price.

What to verify BEFORE you buy (any option)

  1. Voltage. Default is 380V 3-phase (Chinese industrial standard). Specify 220V or 240V single-phase 60Hz for the US patio; add a frequency converter note ($60–150) if the motor doesn't accept 60Hz natively.
  2. Spray-system included? The pearl method needs a binder spray — ask explicitly. Most Chinese SXYZ units include a basic spray bar; confirm rather than assume.
  3. Tilt range. The spec you want is 20°–60° adjustable. Some entry-level Chinese units ship with a fixed 45° pan. Confirm "adjustable tilt" in writing.
  4. RPM range + variable speed. Target 15–50 RPM with a dial, not a fixed 33 RPM. Ask about a VFD (variable frequency drive) if it's not standard — it's a common $60 add-on.
  5. Disc material. Mild carbon steel is standard on fertilizer units and fine for cremains (they're chemically inert and don't corrode steel the way compost does). Stainless-lined upgrade exists but isn't necessary.
  6. Shipping Incoterm. Get the quote as CIF your US port (Cost+Insurance+Freight) not FOB (where you arrange freight yourself). CIF is worth the ~$150 bump for the hassle-avoided.
  7. Warranty. 12 months is standard. Ask for it in writing on the invoice.

Decision path

  1. Set Machinio + eBay alerts for "disc pelletizer" and "pan granulator". No cost, no time. Lets a used find surface while you move on the Chinese unit.
  2. WhatsApp Yushunxin today (+86-182-0399-3035). Ask for a formal quote on the SXYZ-600 CIF Savannah (or Port of Charleston / Jacksonville — whichever is closest), 220V single-phase, with adjustable tilt, VFD, and binder spray. Lead time + warranty in writing. That quote + this page = a decision packet you can sit with for a week.
  3. Mars Mineral is a parallel ask — call 724-538-3000, say "pricing on a DP-14 Agglo-Miser for lab-scale pearl-method testing of cremains-in-colloidal-silica binder." See what they quote. If it's under $6K, revisit; over that, the SXYZ-600 wins on bang-for-buck.
  4. No move on spending until you've got quotes in hand + decided on the weekend when you want to commit. Standing rule: any purchase is its own trigger, not a carryover from this page.
